  Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica

With the Pacific Ocean to the west and the emerald waters of Golfo Dulce to the east, Osa Peninsula is home to at least half of all species living in Costa Rica. Shared equally by local residents and wildlife, the peninsula is a primitive paradise of rain forests, empty beaches, and backwater settlements.

Located on the eastern coast of Osa and home to a domestic airport just 2 minutes away, you will find the largest town and a close-knit Tico community, Puerto Jimenez. From Puerto Jiménez, you can explore just about everything there is to offer, even take a ferry across the gulf to the colorful city of Golfito. Exploring the history of this small, unhurried city may give you the impression of the Wild Wild West. This laidback town is one of the main gateways to the beautiful Corcovado National Park. As the last town before one can enter the park premises; you can trek your way through the gorgeous and diverse wildlife that the park has to offer. Catch a glimpse of the rare and beautiful Scarlet Macaws as they fly overhead and spot up to 4 different monkey species and many brightly colored birds.

If you like a more tranquil, relaxed holiday, take a dolphin watching tour of the lovely Golfo Dulce and the Pacific, or simply sit on the beach to view some of the most amazing sunsets in all of Costa Rica. If you prefer the more adventurous activities, hiking, rappelling, mountain biking and kayaking tours are on hand. There is also a lovely remote village of Cabo Matapalo, which is famous in the region for its awesome surf breaks.

To go to Puerto Jimenez, you can take the bus. Buses leave daily from San José and pass through San Isidro de El General where passengers can also get on. Bus 699 leaves from San Jose at 6am and 12 noon, taking about 10 hours to reach Puerto Jimenez. Bus 612 to Golfito can also be taken, which takes about 8 hours and leaves at 7am and 3pm. There is also a small airport in Puerto Jimenez that is serviced by SANSA, and TravelAir/NatureAir. These flights generally run once or twice daily coming from San Jose and cost around $130.
